2008 M3 comprehensive Test / Review

http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/vdp/articleId=124954/pageNumber=1

Notice the 0-60 times they attempt are two-fold: One being from a dead stop and another being with a 1-foot roll. I think this has to do with the clutch take-up, since all manual Bimmers have clutch-delay valves (CDV). The latter accomplished the 60mph run in 4.3 seconds :)

BMW 135i vs Porsche Cayman

In the UK, the base Cayman MSRP is 6000 pounds more than the 135i. I guess that's why they didn't test it against the Cayman S, even though the HP would be more similar:

Comparison Test: 2007 BMW 335i vs. 2008 Infiniti G37

335i vs E55 AMG vs E63 AMG vs E60 m5

Welcome to the Supra Turbo of the 21st century. There are some 335's already pushing over 400 wheel hp and over 450 wheel lb-ft torque:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3MAcbel9vEc

And that's what 15 psi sustained will do. Get ready for some serious crying by boys with more expensive toys. Awwww, it tugs at your heart strings doesn't it? Awww.

lol, E63 amg. Yeah, howze *this* feel baby? http://s153.photobucket.com/albums/s235/WalkedU/?action=view&current=vsjon.flv

Ouch...crushed every run by at least 2 car lengths. Here is the commentary:

"Heres part 2 of the videos.

Me the camera car, jon in the middle lane the e63 in the far right.

Jon was honking so the E63 could hear.

First run for me boost was going iffy but the other 2 were ok.

Jons car was running very quick last night. Awesome to see his car that fast.

When I boosted properly the most I could walk away by was like 1-1.5 CL, more like 1.

He was on basicly 92-92.5 octane he had less than a 1/4th of a tank left of 100 and we tried to burn it off before the meet. Funny stuff tho his car didnt throw any codes with the couple H and R switch on. Go go JB hahahah

We are both on pump gas.

Anyways sorry you cant see the E63, its hard to capture it. Basicly tho everytime we ran the E63 would be behind us about 2 CL's or so. I believe after 1.5 CL's it gave up but me and jon kept going.

Oh also every car had 1 passenger.

The first run the e63 didnt line up i believe. You can barley see the E63 sorry I should have been in the middle lane."

2009 Jaguar XF sedan - Ian Callum strikes again

The all-new 2009 Jaguar XF is by FAR my favorite new car for the year. I am extremely excited about it in a strange way (given that I was never really a big Jaguar fan), because this baby finally looks like the absolute knock-out winner that the company deserves and needs.

It looks like an Aston, but for a fraction of the cost (it starts BELOW $50K !!!). A loaded one goes for a bit over 60k. That is extremely competitive.

The design is absolutely awesome in my view, as is the interior. They are already saying it drives beautifully and is masterfully refined and sporty.

And I believe it. I drove the XK, an older design, but their current coupe, and it was extremely competent and impressive.

It has already won Car of the Year from a couple of publications in Europe.

Other than the high weight of the XF (over 4K lbs), the rest of the package is absolutely impressive if you ask me. I mean just check out the interior: The panels light up with perimeter lighting ala the Motorola Razr. The startup sequence is damn cool and unique. Hell, even the unique color combinations for the interior are super sweet.

You owe it to yourself to check it out:

http://www.jaguarxf.com/default.asp

If I were in the market for a premium sedan with a price tag quite a bit below six figures, this is a no-brainer for me. I never thought I'd say that, but this car just caught my attention like a magnet from day 1 !!

Interesting E46 M3-related info from ROUNDEL magazine

Hey there 3-series/M3 folks:

I got my first issue of the BMW roundel magazine since I just joined BMW CCA club. They have a Tech Talk section where people send in comments/questions and the tech editors answer them. You know, like in the other car mags.
Well here are a couple that should prove interesting to you guys that caught my eye:

S54 engine redline:
"S54 is an outstanding achievement marred by TWO things: 1) The ridiculous 8000 rpm redline mandated by BMW's marketing weenies, which together with other factors such as oil temperature and 15,000-mile oil changes, led to these engines self-destructing in the E46 M3. No problem in the Mcoupe and Mroadster, because those have 7,600-rpm redlines. Last service action on the S54 included a DME reprogramming -- including a lower redline. How low? We don't know. BMW isn't talking about it. My guess is 7,900, which, apparently, is low enough. 2) 15,000-mile oil changes: Even with BMW's excellent Castrol-made TWS Motorsport 10W-60, that's simply too long. It's what causes the sludge problem."
So keep that rpm no higher than 7600 rpm and change your oil every 7500 miles and your S54 will live long and prosper.

SMG Shift-Switch Cleaning?
This one guy was saying how his UPSHIFT paddle on his 80k miles M3 SMG (2002 model) began to sometimes not work when he pulls on it. He claims it's a bit more stable in colder weather but was asking what's up with that. He said his tunnel shifter continues to work fine though. The Roundel editor told him they haven't heard of this problem before, but it's most likely just a switch contact issue. There's a switch set under the steering-wheel airbag module that is connected by a wiring harness. The shift levers actuate the switches. He probably just needs to spray the switches with electrical-contact cleaner, then reinstall. The airbag has to come out for this quick job however.

How to shift the SMG?
A 2004 SMG M3 owner wrote in asking them what's the best way to shift. Lett up on the accelerator between shifts, or no? Here's their abridged answer"
"It's quite difficult to shift smoothly in any BMW SMG except for hard acceleration in S4 and S5. I don't see what harm throttle lift can possibly cause. I agree that SMG power shifts seem to e very hard on the drivetrain, the differential in particular. And they're also hard on the rear tow bushings. Regarding the former, the M variable-lock differential is a masterpiece and appears to be quite strong. Moreover, M-cars have the benefits of a 1200-mile break-in service and gearbox and diff oil changes every inspection II (every ~60k miles) -- maintenance BMW refuses to authorize on non-M cars, to their eventual detriment. Regarding the latter, M3 drivers operating con brio are now accustomed to replacing the toe bushings every 10-20k miles. Normal street use, figure every 40-50k. There are permanent aftermarket solutions, but you have the choice between paying $700 for a set of quiet and durable Dinan toe bushings, or far less for a set of noisy and durable toe bushings from a number of other sources."

Fun fact mentioned about the 335i engine:
"Young powerplants are expected to have teething problems, in all new-model BMWs. It's not like the 1980s when new-model BMWs were tested out the wazoo before being put into regular production. Nowadays, the competition is way too fierce for that; the lead times are very short. Final R&D is literally being left to the dealership technicians to figure out".

Quick comment about 335i vs E46 M3:
"I loved the 335i coupe I tested for Bimmer magazine for 1,200 miles. I had some niggling complaints, but overall the car was superb -- and there's no question it handles better than a stock E46 M3. Whether it's more fun is a different question, and one that I would answer in the negative. The 335i is truly an oustanding luxury GT and it would unequivocally be my choice for year-round use or long road trips. Either car is excellently suited for daily use, but in terms of winter set-up, I think the 335i would edge out the E46 M3."

What the BMW N54 (335i/135i) turbos look like...

A California-based tuner named "AutoTalent" recently did some surgery on their 335i test mule and posted pics of the twin turbos. Check em out.

The engineer is sure that the stock internals can hold 18-20psi that bigger turbos can give. Question is can the headgasket and ignition system hold up, and can the stock injectors give enough fuel for that much boost?

No matter, this engine powers what everyone's calling "The 1st Supra Turbo of the 21st Century". Given that it's all-aluminum, you won't be seeing 600RWHP with stock internals, but it's interesting to see what it can do with the 500 range...possibly??

BMW GROUP (WORLDWIDE): 2007 SALES REVENUE RISES TO RECORD LEVEL

    01/30/2008

Sales revenue up by 14.3% to euro 56,018 million+++
Sales volume set to reach new high level again in 2008+++

Munich. The BMW Group has achieved a new sales revenue record in 2007. Compared to the previous year, group revenues rose by 14.3% to euro 56,018 million (2006: euro 48,999 million). Revenues of the Automobiles segment went up by 12.7% to euro 53,818 million (2006: euro 47,767 million). The Motorcycles segment reported sales of euro 1,228 million (2006: euro 1,265 million /-2.9%), while the Financial Services segment increased its revenues by 25.8% to euro 13,940 million (2006: euro 11,079 million).

The total number of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand vehicles delivered to customers in 2007 also rose to its highest level to date, with the sales volume rising by 9.2% to 1,500,678 units (2006: 1,373,970 units). This upper single-digit growth rate means that the BMW Group was well within the sales volume target that it had set itself for the full year. "

#5,000,000 BMW 5-series rolls off assembly line

The 5 millionth 5-series ever (a Carbon Black Metallic 530d pictured below) to be produced rolled off the assembly line at the Dingolfing plant yesterday. And boy was she a beauty.

A little historical background on BMW's 5-series cars:

    - the first generation 5-series (E12) started its life in 1972, based on the 1970 BMW Garmisch 2002ti concept. It debuted at the Geneva Motor Show that year.
    - the E12's range of engines consisted of four and six cylinder engines, with a six cylinder 218 horsepower engine at the top range
    - the E60's (current 5-series) range of engines consists of six and eight cylinder engines, with a ten cylinder 500 horsepower engine at the top range in the ///M5.

Needless to say, the 5-series has come along way from its 1st to the 5,000,000th unit.

SUV Owners Must Pay $50 Per Day to Drive in London

    http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/business/suv-owners-must-pay-50-per-day-to-drive-in-london/752

London Mayor Ken Livingstone has partially built his career on making London more environmentally friendly.

    traffic
    Piccadilly Circus in central London

He’s made a few missteps in tackling environmental problems, such as the recent law he was promoting that would have hurt on bike use in the city. But today, in the thick of his mayoral re-election campaign, he announced what is in effect a massive tax hike on gas guzzling vehicles in the city of London.

London already charges a tax, known as a congestion charge, on almost all vehicles that enter central and parts of west London. Certain vehicles, such as those hybrids or eco-friendly fuel cars are exempt. Livingstone’s most recent announcement, however, vastly increases the charge for the highest polluting vehicles.

Vehicles in band G, those that emit more than 225 grams of CO2 per kilometre, will pay a whopping £25($50) every day to enter the congestion zone. This will mostly affect heavy 4×4 vehicles. Most other vehicles will continue to pay the daily charge of £8($16).

Livingstone had previously discussed the congestion charge hike, but likely chose to formally announce it now in an effort to strengthen his campaign. He has frequently highlighted his “green” credentials throughout the campaign.

Livingstone said in a written statement: “A key issue at the election is my proposal for a £25-a-day charge for the most CO2-emitting vehicles entering the congestion-charging zone and, after consultation, I will be able to take a decision on this in the coming month. On the environment, the choice is even starker. [Mayoral opponent Boris Johnson] is one of the few politicians who supported George W Bush in opposing the Kyoto treaty.”

The move has come under some criticism from the Automobile Association. They argue the charge will penalize small business owners who use vans to conduct business in the city, as well as large families who must use bigger vehicles to travel.

    Because he's worth it

    $1.5m a week for Porsche’s Wiedeking

The size of the pay-out, a rather more sensitive issue in egalitarian Germany than in the shark-infested waters of Wall Street and the City, was enough to trigger a rant from German Chancellor Angela Merkel against corporate fat cats
How much pay is a good – really good – motor industry manager worth? Is it a million dollars? A couple of million? The latter is roughly what General Motors chief Rick Wagoner is getting as he continues to try and turn the titanic (pun only half-intended) supertanker around.

Ask Wendelin Wiedeking, the hyper-active, caterpillar-moustached chief executive of Porsche the same question and he is likely to blush a bit, roll his eyes cheerfully around the room, drum fingers and whistle innocently while trying not to give a direct answer. Not surprising, really; because for every week he went to work last year, he pocketed well over $1.5m.

The size of the pay-out, a rather more sensitive issue in egalitarian Germany than in the shark-infested waters of Wall Street and the City, was enough to trigger a rant from German Chancellor Angela Merkel against corporate fat cats. But, just like those hoary ol’ l’Oreal ads, Wiedeking can lay claim to be worth it. Ridiculous as it sounds, Porsche made a pre-tax profit of 5.9bn Euros ($8.5bn) last year on sales of just 7.4bn Euros ($12bn), even though more of the money came from financial wheeler-dealing and share options than direct car-making. There have been big bonuses for both workers and shareholders.

Few see the gravy train slowing. Industry analysis group Global Insight sees Porsche’s sales passing through the 100,000 threshold to soar to 120,000 a year after the Panamera four-door comes in during 2009. When Wiedeking first arrived at Porsche 15 years ago, it was close to bankrupt.

However with Porsche poised to take a 50 per cent stake in Europe’s biggest car maker, the Volkswagen group, early in the New Year (it is already VW’s biggest shareholder), Wiedeking’s mettle faces sterner tests than most he has confronted at the luxury sports car maker. He will move on to VW’s supervisory board determined to lick VW into shape to fend off strengthening Asian competition. Time to place bets on the winner……

Spy Photos: 2009 BMW Progressive Activity Sedan

    From: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=124596

MUNICH, Germany — BMW is developing another all-new model to fill the gap in its model line between the 5 Series wagon and the 2009 X6 SUV. At this time, BMW's newcomer is dubbed the Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS), which BMW considers an all-new creation in the multitude of SUVs, SAVs, MPVs and APVs.

Although the PAS prototype is still under heavy disguise, it already reveals a sloping hatchback, similar to the X6 that debuted in January at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, but with more headroom for the rear passengers. BMW intends to steer clear of the minivan category, instead designing a sportier vehicle that avoids the perceived stigma of a family van.

Based on the new BMW 5 Series platform, the new PAS is scheduled

for launch in 2009. Power is expected to come from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine delivering 272 horsepower, and possibly a future direct-injection V8 delivering 420 hp.

"The Short, Deadly Story of a Kid and his M5"

This is very messed up. An 18yo kid and 4 of his pals perish in Florida while in his 2008 M5:

    http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Columns/articleId=124526#3

Here's the M5board.com thread with videos and pics of the crash:

    http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=111545

Thanks to my buddy Hao for pointing me to this story. It's incredible that this happened in a car as stable, accomplished, and safe as the E60 M5. I mean just look at the pics to understand the madness they put it through.

He posted on the BMW M5 forum — www.M5board.com — as "AmericanM5," the proud new owner of a 2008 BMW M5 painted Space Gray.

He had a problem. It happened when he had "everything set to max" and changed gear with the shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. As he said, "and I'm going pedal to the metal pushing 140 and upshifting, there tends to be a thud noise with the gear change." AmericanM5 wanted to know if this was normal.

And he added: "Let me say I am a beginner when it comes to high-performance cars as I am only 18, so take it easy on me."

    Reality Check
The forum members told him that yes, the sensation of an abrupt gear engagement is normal with the M5's automated sequential manual transmission, but several also took the opportunity to express their concerns.

Wrote one: "It's just disturbing to know...that an 18-year-old who is asking these questions about a 500-horsepower car is driving the same streets I am. I don't have anything against young guys driving nice cars, but an 18-year-old being [behind] the wheel of an M5 is what accidents are made of."

AmericanM5 responded: "I completely understand where you are coming from, assuming that I am irresponsible...that is definitely understandable. I do sometimes make bad decisions but I am young and I do drive safe and I will not endanger the lives of others."

These posts were dated January 25, 2008.

    Space Gray
At 3:30 a.m. on January 26, a 2008 BMW M5 painted Space Gray flew off the raised end of a runway at a private airport just outside Ocala, Florida, sailed 200 feet through the air and stuck a huge tree. The impact with the tree occurred 15 feet off the ground. Five young men, aged 18 to 20, were killed instantly.

Members of the M5Board began to put the pieces together. AmericanM5 said he was 18, had a 2008 M5 in Space Gray, and said he lived in the Ocala area. And he signed one of the posts, "Josh."

The driver of the crashed M5 had been Josh Ammirato.

    Experience Counts
Apparently AmericanM5 had not been entirely truthful in his postings. The M5 belonged not to him, but instead to his father.

When members of the M5board forum had made this suggestion online, AmericanM5 bristled: "It's mine, buddy. I just traded in my 335i and paid the difference."

Another member suggested that AmericanM5's lack of knowledge about the BMW M5's transmission could be easily explained: "Maybe your two years' driving experience in your whole life is the problem."

AmericanM5 responded: "That could be a good assumption but the fact I never drive a manual car before may be true, but I've been driving for a lot longer than two years, buddy."

Reports indicate that Ammirato had received four traffic citations in the last two years.

    Is This for Real?
The crash occurred at the Greystone Airport, which is bordered on one side by Jumbolair Estates, a fly-in community where actor and pilot John Travolta lives; he filed a suit in 2007 to compel the owners to allow him to land his Boeing 707 on the strip.

The fly-in community was built by the late Arthur Jones, inventor of Nautilus exercise equipment. The airstrip is 7,550 feet (1.5 miles) long and is 210 feet wide. Apparently it can be accessed through an unguarded gate.

The five occupants of the M5 had attended a basketball game, and then a party where they were celebrating the 19th birthday of Dustin "Smiley" Dawe, one of the men killed.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that there was evidence of skid marks at the end of the runway, indicating the car had turned sideways before crossing a sloped embankment and sailing through the air and into the tree. Alcohol does not appear to have been involved. The accident made headlines in the Ocala Star-Banner.

    A Final Word
The final exchange between AmericanM5 and the rest of the forum members came late on January 25.

Some members wondered if the 18-year-old M5 owner was for real, and suggested that he post some photos of his car. Others wondered why a teenager would opt for an expensive sedan instead of more conventional sports car like a Porsche.

A forum member from Queensland, Australia, applauded AmericanM5's decision to get a BMW: "I would much prefer an 18-year-old with brains to have an M5 rather than spend his money on some other piece of junk that could kill him and his mates in an accident," wrote M5DAL, a forum member since 2004. He continued: "If you crash in a big way, expect to be on the news."

"Thanks, guys, don't get me wrong," AmericanM5 wrote. "I never said I didn't respect your wisdom. Thanks for the welcome, and I am looking forward to getting to know you guys better...and I plan to have all the pics up tomorrow. Josh."

    That was his last post.

A bit better photo of the runway. The impact trees are at the bottom of the photo...

BMW, Audi unveil diesels for 21st century

    ============================================================================================

BMW, Audi unveil diesels for 21st century

Marketing’s executive editor Paul Ferriss is in Detroit this week to cover the North American International Auto Show

Both BMW and Audi had diesels and performance cars to talk about in Detroit this week. But while BMW had high-ranking German executives to talk up the benefits to the environment and the pleasures of driving, Audi had Bryan Adams.

After executive vice-president of Audi America Johan de Nysschen addressed the media Sunday afternoon, the veteran Canadian singer walked casually onstage with his acoustic guitar and sang “The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You,” as the checkered flag cover came off the new Audi TTS sports car. Adams later posed for photos with Audi executives before disappearing backstage.

Audi is introducing a diesel version of its R8

In keeping with the green theme that has taken hold at the North American International Auto Show, Audi and BMW touted the benefits of diesel power, both from an environmental and performance perspective. Audi used the diesel version of its R8 supercar, the R8 TDI, as the perfect, if not extreme, example.

Claiming a possible 185 mph top speed and the ability to go from 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, the concept car is powered by what Audi refers to as a “clean diesel” engine. “Audi wants to challenge the last piece of conventional wisdom about diesel power,” said Rupert Staller, chair of the Audi board of management.

Karsten Ruwoldt, Audi Canada’s recently appointed director of marketing and product management, said automakers should have an easier time marketing diesels to Canadian consumers, while the American market will be tougher to educate.

“Canadians have a more positive view of diesels,” he said. “And Canadians are ready for a clean diesel.”

Ruwoldt believes more Canadians have come in contact with diesels in Europe and are aware of their fuel-saving benefits. Plus, he added, Canadians take longer driving trips which are ideal for fuel-sipping diesels.

BMW meanwhile announced the North American availability of its Advanced Diesel engine with Blue Performance. The engine will be available this year in the X5 SUV and the 335 sedan.

    BMW's new 1 Series

“Customers expect vehicles that are high performance, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly,” said Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the board of management at BMW AG.

Almost overshadowing the diesel introduction, which came with loud Euro-style music and acrobatic dancers, was the debut of the 1 Series and X6 concept “performance sports activity vehicle.” Imagine an SUV that thinks it’s a sports car.

The 1 Series is the “reincarnation of the 2002,” said chairman and CEO of BMW U.S., Tom Purves, recalling the classic coupe that still enchants enthusiasts. It’s aimed at a different consumer target than most other BMWs and a unique Canadian marketing plan is in the works.

US: Audi considering first plant in North America

US: Audi considering first plant in North America
    By Glenn Brooks
    15 January, 2008
    Source: Automotive World

According to a report in The Detroit News, Audi is considering building a production plant in the US. The Ingolstadt-based brand's chief executive, Rupert Stadler, says that while Volkswagen is also close to deciding on whether or not to construct a second North American production facility, Audi would not necessarily share this factory.

"We're considering that," Stadler said when asked on the eve of the Detroit motor show if Audi might build a US plant.

Even with the weak dollar, while the brand's US sales remain at the current 90,000upa level, the chief executive maintains that it makes little sense to build cars in the US. "But if you're dreaming about a 200,000 sales base, you have to make up your mind what you have to do," he added.

The German luxury brand sold less than half as many cars and SUVs as BMW or Mercedes-Benz in the US market in 2007, with sales of 93,508 units. This compares to 253,316 Mercedes-Benz cars and SUVs and just under 300,000 BMWs cars and SUVs, not counting Mini sales.

Audi's medium term target for the local market is 200,000 units, part of a plan to lift production by nearly 50% to 1.5 million vehicles by 2015. Like Infiniti, Audi has watched the sales of Lexus (Ontario), BMW (South Carolina), Mercedes-Benz (Alabama) and, to lesser extent, Acura (Ontario), rise steadily as each of those brands has opened and then expanded plants.

The Volkswagen subsidiary also believes it can convince luxury car buyers in North America to embrace diesel technology, something only Mercedes-Benz has been able to do thus far, albeit on a small scale.

"In Europe, already 50% of the car mix is diesel, and customers choose diesel because it's more fuel-efficient. Why shouldn't it also work here?" Johan de Nysschen, Audi of America's executive vice president ponders in the same Detroit News report. "The driving characteristics of diesels today are totally suited to American driving conditions," he adds.

As well as new, more powerful versions of its TT coupe and roadster, Audi is using the Detroit show to premiere a concept version of its R8 supercar powered by a twelve-cylinder diesel engine, drawing parallels with its Le Mans 24 Hours-winning racing cars.

Neither Stadler nor de Nysschen would be drawn on stating a date for a decision on a possible US assembly plant.

Official power output figures are not out yet. Not that it matters too much, because the current Z06's advertised 505hp power output turned out to be understated...by quite a bit...

Snow Brawl: 8 mid-size Lux SUVs comparison

C&D did a comparo in 2007 between the 8 mid-size Lux SUVs on the market in North America.

    http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/12669/eight-tickets-to-paradise-we-compare-eight-50000-luxury-suvs.html

    Here were the results:

    Placement:

    8th: Land Rover LR3 HSE
Highs: Vast off-road prowess, quiet cabin, a 360-degree view of the world.
Lows: Vague steering, an overwhelmed V-8, dismal fuel economy.
Verdict: Right now-TODAY-Land Rover must learn to slice 1000 lbs from every single vehicle it makes.

    7th: Volkswagen Touareg V-6
Highs: Light steering, supple ride, confident off-road.
Lows: Cramped back seat, too many rattles, no personality.
Verdict: In need of a refreshening as extensive as the BMW X5's.

    6th: Volvo XC90 Sport
Highs: A rocket in the passing lane, agile in traffic, an SUV Ralph Nader could love.
Lows: Wrong tires, jittery ride, way too little luxury for 50 grand.
Verdict: We love that it's almost a car, but why can't it be sexier?

    5th: Lexus GX470
Highs: Solid Platform, fearless off-road, full-luxo interior.
Lows: Scattershot switchgear, still not enough power, undisciplined body motions.
Verdict: Still the luxury SUV for body-on-frame purists, but it's feeling a little old.

    4th: Mercedes ML350
Highs: A quiet freeway cruiser, silky 7-speed tranny.
Lows: Cheap and dull-looking dash, mysteriously mushy brake feel.
Verdict: Will win a devoted following if it proves more defect-free than its forebearer.

    3rd: BMW X5 3.0si
Highs: BMW steering, BMW brakes, BMW handling.
Lows: Slim cargo space, still too heavy, world's least intuitive shifter.
Verdict: More and more closely resembles a 5-series sedan.

    2nd: Cadillac SRX AWD V-8
Highs: Car-like in all its moves, shark-like silhouette, 320 horsepower.
Lows: Narrow footwhells, restricted off-road potential, too much wind noise.
Verdict: Still one of the proudest and most unexpected successes in Caddilac's history.

    1st: Acura MDX Sport
Highs: Agile in the hills, superior tracking, gratifying to drive.
Lows: Goofy grille, cluttered center stack, no low-range 4WD.
Verdict: As much sport as utility. And hey, it's a honda.

    Nice going Honda!

    What sounds better than this?

IMO, the F355, both stock as well as when equipped with the various aftermarket exhausts, is the best-sounding production road car of all time. 360 Modenas and F430's with Tubi exhausts sound close, but no cigar. This is the head honcho, the uuuultima !

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fIF6Nh7gCo

I challenge you to change my opinion. Please post your clips :)

PS: Here's the best sounding example of the current model, the F430:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUoTbS524to

WOW but not like the 355...

You really wouldn't cough up the extra $100/month for that?

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of the 3-series ;)

But allow me to justify continuously, and accurately, with this and my previous posts (and perhaps future ones). There's a reason Bimmerfest is somewhat of a religious cult following and peppered with 3-series in particular...

We all recognize the new G37 as perhaps the most compelling and competent package, and the very latest, to compete in the class (or even a bit below and above it) to come out of Japan. Brand new chassis, engine, brakes, technology, you name it. So, how does the very best so far from the Land of the Rising Sun compare to the lowly 3-series?

When the new G35 sedan came out, there was much anticipation. It was quickly squashed, even against the prior 330. But when the G37 COUPE news broke out, with the new engine and chassis and brakes, anticipation reached fever pitch.

My bullet points below pretty much hint to you what I hold near and dear when looking for characteristics in a car:

    • ENGINE: "turbo inline-6 is smoother than the G37's V6. And as free-revving as the Nissan VQ V6 is, this twin-turbo six likes to rev even more."
    • SUSPENSION TUNING: "on back roads the 2007 BMW 335i was faster in real-world driving, even though its got softer suspension"
      • "The BMW 3 Series coupe crouches lower than the sedan, but even on run-flats, it's still more compliant than the Infiniti"
    • FEEDBACK: "Feedback is what makes the difference. Both coupes talk to their drivers, but the 335i speaks in great detail."
    • FEEDBACK: "We're so locked into the car's progress down the road through the compliant chassis and textured steering, we push on without reservation."
    • STEERING: "Although the BMW's steering ratio of 16.0:1 suggests otherwise, the 3 Series reacts to its steering more quickly than the G37."
    • BRAKES: "came to a halt in 109 feet and never deviated more than a foot over our series of stops with no fade"
      • Even with "superior" hardware, the G37 brakes faded by the 5th lap, and had inferior stopping distances (
    • GEARSHIFT: "Compared to the G's shift action, though, the BMW has a lighter-effort feel and it snaps positively into gear. The 335i's clutch engagement is also smoother and more predictable than that of the G37"
      • I personally tried the new automatic in the 335, and it's freakin amazing, by far the best I've tried, ever.
    • RIDE COMFORT (despite runflats): "held only a surprisingly slim advantage in ride comfort over the Infiniti, perhaps because of the 335i's run-flat tires."
      • Ok, 18 vs 19 inch, but still
    • EXHAUST: "manly exhaust roar"
    • DRIVING POSITION: "This is the same interior design you'd see in any other 3 Series, yet somehow it never gets old — legible gauges, superb materials, perfect driving position."
    • QUALITY AND ROOM: "If quality and interior passenger volume matter to you, the BMW is the one you want."
      • "Slick and attractive, the G37's cockpit still lacks the quality of a BMW."
    • LEATHER: "True, you pay extra to get leather in the Bimmer, but the standard hides in the G feel like they belong in a $30,000 car, not a $40,000 one."
    • DRIVER ENGAGEMENT AND COMMITMENT: "By most standards, the Infiniti G37 is an impressive car and a lot of fun. But it does not engage its driver with equal commitment."
    • FEEL: "Nearly every aspect of our drive feels more natural in the 335i"
    • PRIORITIES ? "I'm not sure what the price difference is, but the BMW feels $15,000 better."

    • "Judged on the surface, the G37 has a lot to recommend it. It's sleek and swift, and the implied promise of a BMW-like driving experience for fewer duckets is tempting indeed..."
    • "...strike that."
      • The G37's long-stroke V6 is helpless against the 335i's velvety midrange punch, and it sure doesn't feel as fast out in the real world. What's more, the G37's V6 is strained at high engine speeds, warbling uncertainly on its way to the fuel cut-off as if it would prefer you weren't in such a damned hurry."
      • "There's little indication as to what the Infiniti's front tires are doing and the load-up of steering effort feels artificial."
      • "Once you factor all this against the BMW's lively, informative steering, more delicate control feel and punchier power plant, there's no doubt about which coupe is more satisfying to pilot."

"Simply put, the 335i drives on a whole other level."

Yes, you pay more, but it's not like you're bankrupting-yourself-and-your-family amounts of money. But on top of all these points you have:

    • considerably more power, better fuel economy, way more headroom, better visibility, a backseat that's actually useful for adults, a much bigger trunk, better resale value, more supportive seats, free maintenance for 4 years (in the USA), and of course tunability.
    • Nevermind the brand cachet which we all know is a factor for most buyers. It's something you EARN.
    • There are also hidden engineering treats too that aren't advertised too much, to aid safety or practicality or comfort. Yes, the G has toys that the Bimmer doesn't, like backup camera and a cooler nav.

Still surprised they are selling so well? The bullet point items are mainly what is nothing new here between most Bimmers and their peers, even 20+ years back, and certainly for the 3-series. Sure, a hot item on the G is the LSD, which they offered on the old car as well (and sedan) with the sport package. But before you get your feathers all ruffled up about that, know that 5th Gear in the UK recently had the 335i beat the 354hp AWD Audi S5 around a tight under-2-minutes racetrack.

The 3-series is an insanely well-rounded package and the market knows it. And you know what else, their 1, 5, 6, 7 and X series all have the bullet point qualities. They never waver off. Heck, go outside North America and test drive a 4-cylinder 3 series with no sports package and 15 inch wheels, and see how great and superior THAT still feels. I have. More than once.

Now come on, you really wouldn't pay an extra $100 a month for that?

BMW 328i vs the rest: "There's always next year"

As a followup to my 335i comparo post below, this is in regards to its little brother, the normally-aspirated magnesium-aluminum inline-6 powered 328:

The industry's publications have long ago started sounding like a broken record, but for good reason.

Better luck next go around, o' ye' competition!

"It is simply the best executed, best conceived, and best sports sedan currently available for the price. As for the competition, like the Chicago Cubs tell themselves at the end of every season, there’s always next year."

Impressive new car tech on the horizon

Check out these videos, in particular the car-to-car network one:

    Do you...fancy Carrera GT?

Title says it all. Some videos below, each is better than the other.

2 CGTs, one black, owned by this guy Alex out in Cali, and another silver one. Both had straight pipes installed (lol) hence the extra-amazing sound. However...Alex's black car is fitted with lots of other performance parts giving it 730 horsepower and a top speed of 226 mph.

(oh FYI Alex also has a 1000HP Vette Z06. 18-month modifications period. I placed a video of this near the bottom)

Finally, I think with such toys, it pays to be buddies with the California Highway Patrol !!! See last video below.

And it goes w/o saying though, PUMP UP DA VOLUME. No, seriously. If ur watching this with rinky dink $5 speakers that came with your computer when you bought it 4 years ago, stop now.

    M6 vs Z06 ~40mph to 190+ mph

    Yeah, the M6 goes WELL over 300kph in the races...lol. 195 = 313kph.
    Read the video descriptions:
Holy hell is that dude's M6 fast...damn. Over 3900 lbs plus a passenger as well. Yeesh! But those mods are what it takes to counter the massive weight advantage the Z06's got (770lb!!!)
    Here's another race though, with a z06 pumping out 487whp (7300rpm limiter mod too) vs a 445whp M6:
Clearly, even with the advanced transmission this M6 has no chance under 160mph vs that particular Z06, weighing 770+ lbs more and 42whp less.
Woulda loved to see the M6 in the 1st vid against the yellow Z06, given they got almost equal output ^_^
The Sweden airfield guys are releasing a TON more race vids featuring all your favorites from their last event very soon (as soon as their amazon DVD's are ready, they'll post the vids online too).

Car & Driver "Lightning Strikes Twice" articles

Thought these were quite interesting, and figured I'd share thinking you guys would be interested as well. ^_^
Yeah, it's an August 07 issue, a few months old, but anyway:
It's about "rating the best street cars on the track". In this case, the 4.2-mile Virginia International Speedway (VIR). This is their 2nd go-around at this, with the first documented here: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/11755/the-lightning-lap-2006.html
More accurately, they wanted road-going and legal sporty cars "to benchmark their overall performance—not just how they accelerated, braked, gripped, or handled, but how they combined these tasks. To think of it another way, our Lightning Lap test showcases a car’s ability to quickly and safely traverse a challenging section of pavement without running the risk of putting a car through someone’s front yard."
A few interesting takeaways. Let's start:
    The Vettes & The 911's:
The winner, and the only car in both the 06 and 07 tests to do a lap in under 3:00 was the 2007 Z06. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/13185/2007-chevrolet-corvette-z06.html
The interesting part is, last year's Z06 did it in 3:01.1 which is almost 3 seconds longer than the 2007 attempt. Why? Most likely due to the revised rear shocks which made the revised (2007 I believe) considerably easier to drive/handle at the limit. This shows how important it is for engineering to be thorough on a car, especially a sporty road car that is likely to encounter all sorts of conditions in its lifetime.
As awesome as the revised Z06's performance is, they said "In truth, the Z06 wasn’t as satisfying to drive as the 911 GT3". But as they also say, hard to argue with the performance, especially given that the Porsche had special semi-slick racing Michelins (stock).
The GT3 laptiime: 3:01.8. They mention it is faster than the Z06 is a bunch of the sectors on the track, but it suffered from severe lift-throttle oversteer in the middle of turns. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/13186/2007-porsche-911-gt3.html
The standard Vette achieved 3.03.6. That's awesome, especially given that it's running on runflats, and just think of what the 08 car can do, given its larger, more powerful engine, and improved steering and shifter feel...oh and that handily beat the 997 Turbo's time of 3:05.8. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/13192/2007-porsche-911-turbo.html
The Bimmers, The RS4, and a couple more:
"The 335i does everything remarkably well, which is why many of us at Car and Driver think it’s the best all-around car in the world." Damn, lol. ;-)
One thing that made me scratch my head is, how did they weigh their 335i coupe at ONLY 3366 lbs? They should be 3571 base. I guess they're simply going by what the scale said at the racetrack? Whatever, what they drove was a production, roadgoing, unmodded car so it's a moot point (maybe a typo on their part).
    335i laptime: 3:10.5
    RS4 laptime: 3.11.2
Whoa. The 335i beats the mighty RS4, a car that is heralded as easily the best driver's car to come out of Audi's shop in decades (until the advent of the R8 that is). Not only that, although weighed down by a fat 3900+ lbs, it has a 420hp 8250rpm V8 with a proper manual tranny and great brakes. So wtf happened? They touch upon it: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/13184/2007-audi-rs-4.html
Also, take a look at the numbers in each sector here: http://www.caranddriver.com/assets/download/lightninglap_results.pdf comparing the 2 cars (and of course all the others to your liking :))
Look by how much the it's-no-M-car-has-soft-suspension-slow-responses-and-no-LSD 335i beats the RS4 in most of the measurements across the various sectors. Uh, what was that again about it not being an //M car? Run-flats? No LSD? Etc etc? Yeah....
Speaking of, since folks out there want to compare the RS4 v M5, how about its M6 sister, a car weighing in at close to the same as the RS4? 3:10.0 was its best lap (in the previous event of 2006 though, if it matters). Whoa, only half a second faster than the 335i? Dang. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/11755/the-lightning-lap-2006-ll3-60000-120000-page6.html
As for the Cayman S, a car many in the industry rank way up there with the very best handling cars regardless of class or price, it got 3:09.5, or exactly 1 second faster than the 335i on the 4.2 mile stretch of racetrack. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/11755/the-lightning-lap-2006-ll2-30000-60000-page5.html
I wonder what woulda happened if they equipped the amazing Michelin PS2 tires (OEM on the CaymanS) on the 335i instead of it's runflat crappy oem's... ;-)
Better yet, I wonder if you did that on a Procede/JB2/Dinan/Attache-powered 335i...and before u bring forth the stock-vs-modded argument...ask yourself, can any of the other cars featured be modded to gain anything worthwhile for $2000 or less? Well, other than the Corvettes...not really. ;-)
A testament to the overall design of the E9x platform, particularly when you account for its comfort and practicality (not to mention pricing). Can't wait to see what the new M3 will do. Although it's pretty obvious that dominance will occur. Make that, re-occur.
All hail the Corvettes though. Sure, they're crude (alleviated some by the steering/shifter tweaks for 08), but DANG are they performers for the price. Nothing comes close in that regard.

    Official E92 M3 info & pricing

This isn't bad at all considering the E46 M3 was almost 60K in 06 ? They will sell sh*tloads. lol the USA = best country by far in the world for car prices. This thing's 100K in Europe easy.

Reduced fuel consumption, adds 20kg (44 lbs) to the car's weight compared to manual, and an expected drop of 0.2 seconds for the 0-62mph (0-100kph) dash.

My analysis: 2008 Entry-Luxury sport sedan Comparison

Hope u enjoy this analysis as much as I did producing it.
So to start off, this was a comparo performed by Edmunds. The winner was the G35 sport sedan:
Well, the reality is, it depends on your priorities, in terms of influencing your decision on what to pic, Right? ...
Btw every car in the test was with an auto.
Now for the fun part, which is that the Editors' Evaluations list had the 335i score #1 in 22 categories...and the G35 only 2...but hey, they own the article, not me.
    Just look at this page:
Here's a partial listing of criteria that have nothing to do with performance/drive/feel, which are typically no-brainer BMW dominance territories:
    Exterior design: BMW #1
    Interior Design: BMW #1
    Interior materials: BMW #1
    Instrument Panel Layout: BMW #1
Interior Control Tactile Feel: BMW #1
    Squeaks and rattles: BMW #1
Panel Fitment and Gaps: BMW #1 (tied)
    Visibility: BMW #1
    Cargo/trunk space: BMW #1 (tied)

Here's some commentary I picked out from this latest article:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    • (5) C350 Sport: "It drives well, but there's nothing here that makes us want to get behind the wheel for more."
"The Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport reminds you that it's German every second."
    • (4) Lexus IS350: "Not one editor who scored this test was able to find the kind of personal connection with the Lexus that they felt behind the wheel of the top-scoring cars." "Put simply, the Lexus is a fast, well-built sedan that lacks the spirit or value of its more engaging counterparts."
"The Lexus IS 350 is ideal for metropolitan commute traffic, when quiet isolation is what you want for most of the day, except for that one challenging off-ramp on the way home from work."
    • (3) Cadillac CTS: "The 2008 Cadillac CTS might just be the best car in the GM stable. " "Inside, the CTS is the best-appointed car in the test."
"The Cadillac CTS is hyper-American, better to drive slow than it is to drive fast, yet it has a genuinely terrific down-the-road feel that's great for covering vast distances. "
    • (2) BMW 335i: "Behind the wheel, the 335i is the most intuitive and easy-to-drive car here — not to mention the fastest. It's also the most comfortable. And that's a tough combination to beat." " The 335i also brings home the most recommended ratings, which means we would suggest it to a friend over any other car in the test. It even won our lengthy 31-point evaluation, which appraises everything from control feel to cupholder design."
"BMW has learned more from Lexus than we realize, as the 335i's combination of quiet, comfortable resilience with serious speed is what makes this overweight car work so well."
    • (1) Infiniti G35 Sport: "Wins this test because it's outstanding to drive and it gives you the most car for your money."
"The Infiniti G35 hands you a great engine, clever chassis concept, big tires and a steering wheel (and not much else), and sometimes that's all you need. "
"The G's five-speed tranny not only responds quickest to the throttle, but also has the sharpest, most aggressive gearchanges (with rev-matched downshifts) of any automatic we've ever driven."
^^^^^^^^ Whoa, wtf? I drove Talal's 07 G35 auto...and Zeid's 07 335 auto...I recall the difference. Err...is the auto in the G37 the exact same? I'll double check this thanksgiving ^_^ Talal how u liking the G37 Coupe?? Much better than the sedan?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For more in-depth discussion, and a "tad" bit of contradictions to this latest comparison test (*wink*), read their other related articles:

Obviously in this comparo, for the 335i not to win...the culprit was price. But as with almost everything in life, you gotta pay to play...and you get what you pay for.
As for the IS350, a car with lots of fans who are clamoring to have it dethrown the 3-series...well, allow me to speak to that.

As Edmunds mentioned, it has an excellent powertrain that allows it to cover the 1/4 mile mark at over 100mph. That alone tells you it is a quick car hands-down. And handling figures are right up there close to the bimmer. But unfortunately they reported not one editor out of the 5 of them felt "connected" when driving it. Citing things like "awkward and synthetic steering, soft brake pedal, slow-responding tranny" etc. It gave them the least confidence behind the wheel compared to the competition here. It doesn't encourage you to drive hard, which really hurt its ranking cuz they figure a proper sports sedan SHOULD encourage you to do so, via how it makes you feel behind the wheel.
But as they said, for many buyers, such a characteristic doesn't matter that much to them so it would score more highly.
A loaded 335i here will cost 53K msrp. I am not sure what a loaded IS350 will cost but I am *pretty* sure it is 49K max. And that gets you more toys than the bimmer (even though at 53K the bimmer has a ton of toys, but things like backup camera is not available, for example).
Interestingly, they found the latest NAV systems in the Benz and Caddy to be more refined and cost less, than the Lexus'. Wow. Things have changed from just a few years ago !
Basically they knocked on the Lexus cuz it lacks spirit, soul, a connection it makes the driver feel with the machine, which is something that makes me love BMW's and Porsches so much. Also, since price was a high priority in this test, given their audience, and given that it caused the unanimous favorite-by-a-mile 335i not win the comparo, it also hurt that the Lexus being tested had the highest price, even though the most toys.
End of the day bro the BMW may have a less sexy-to-the-eyes interior and less options, but it's so much better to drive than the IS. At low speed, highway, high speeds, when you're taking turns at any speed, when you're using the brakes, when you quickly summon power, etc. To me, that is worth more than anything (but to a point). Couple that with the fact that the bimmer offers this experience in 4door, 2 door, RWD, AWD, and even wagon formats, it makes the attraction and admiration/respect even higher. They're selling like hotcakes in North America.

Here are the Year-To-Date (2007 calendar year, Jan 1 till Oct, I think) sales of these cars (from the manufacturers):

    BMW 3-series 117,968
    Infiniti G 59,003
    MB C-class 49,882
    Lexus IS 45,433
    Audi A4/S4 36,330

The C-class sales would "probably" be higher if the redesigned car had been available for the entire year like the others. I know that Benz got over 60,000 orders for the new C-class even before it hit the showroom floor. Infiniti deserves all the success it is getting, an awesome package for the price, and I can't wait to test drive your G37 Tallool ;-) And two huge thumbs up to CADILLAC for making something truly noteworthy...finally.
2008 will be very interesting for the sales figures as the competition has certainly improved. The new Caddy, C-class and soon new A4 hit the streets. Alas, I still think BMW will deservedly crush them. Note that I am aware of Audi's superior sales figures in Europe over BMW, due to deisels, btw...so it's not all world dominance by the big B M and W.
